An Oregon man is facing charges after he allegedly called a Black man a racial slur before ordering his dog to attack him.

According to Fox 12, 29-year-old Zachary T. Hay is facing charges of second-degree assault and first-degree bias crime in connection to a pitbull attack against Marcus Evans in Portland.

Evans was out in downtown Portland on May 12 when Hay, who allegedly recognized him from his security job at a local grocery store, is said to have called him a racial slur. According to the Portland Police Bureau, Hay then ordered his dog to attack Evans. The attack left Evans with injuries to his chest and hand.

Police said at least one other victim was injured in the attack.

Hay was taken into custody after one of the victims saw him in downtown Portland on May 20. He was booked into the Multnomah County Jail and his dog was taken to Multnomah County Animal Services.

“I’m taking it day by day,” Evans told KTLC10 in the aftermath of the incident. “I’ve lived all over the United States, and I’ve never dealt with racism as much as I have in Portland.” Adding, “It seems to be very accepted behavior by a lot of people out here.”
