The internet is buzzing after several surprise picks and trades from the first night of the 2025 NFL draft.
On Thursday (April 24), 32 picks were made by teams across the league in the first round of the NFL draft held at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Miami quarterback Cam Ward went first overall to the Tennessee Titans, as projected by many draft boards. Heisman trophy winner and Colorado star Travis Hunter, the second overall pick, went to the Jacksonville Jaguars after the team struck a trade deal with the Cleveland Browns.
The biggest surprise of the night came when Hunter's teammate and Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders went undrafted in the first round. At one point before the draft, Sanders was widely predicted to go as early as third overall to the New York Giants.
With the third pick, the Giants drafted Penn State DE Abdul Carter. The team later traded back into the first round and again passed on Sanders for Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, the 25th overall pick.
Sanders didn't appear in Green Bay, instead opting to watch the draft from his home in Texas with his father, Colorado coach, and NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, and his brother, Deion Sanders Jr.
In a speech shared by the former NFL star, the Colorado QB admitted that he was surprised to not go in the first round, but said he wasn't going to be discouraged.
"We all didn't expect this, of course, but I feel like with God, anything possible, everything possible. I don't feel like this happened for no reason. All of this is, of course, fuel to the fire. Under no circumstances did we all know this was going to happen, but we understand we on to bigger and better things. Tomorrow's the day. We going to be happy regardless. Legendary," Sanders said.
Many social media users also expressed shock over the decision by NFL teams to pass on the star quarterback. Some likened the move to "racism" after the Giants drafted Dart over Sanders. Others said franchises were trying to "humble" the Sanders family following Coach Prime's success in the league and thereafter.
