An engaged couple died just hours apart in two separate car crashes in Louisiana, per The Root.
According to Louisiana State Police, Alexus Lee lost control of her vehicle on Friday (May 16) just after 2 a.m. Lee's SUV overturned, and she died at the scene of the crash.
Hours later, Lee's fiancé, John "JR" Collins, with whom she shares their 4-year-old son, Gabriel, lost control of his vehicle while heading to the scene of her crash. Collins hit a tree and was ejected from his car. He died at the scene.
Collins, a truck driver, and Lee, a teacher and recent Southern University graduate, were set to get married in early 2026 and were in the process of moving into their newly purchased home before their deaths.
Collins' mother said the family is doing their best to support Gabriel after he lost both of his parents on the same day.
“He’s just having a little problem comprehending that we can’t talk to them, that we can’t see them. But he understands that they’re asleep,” Sandra, Collins' mother, said of the young child. “The two families will blend, and we will do whatever it takes to give him a good life,” she said.
Lee's sister, Dominique, noted that the couple's son is in good care following the tragic loss.
“I know they left here knowing their child is in good hands, for sure,” Dominque said.
