An Illinois man has been charged after allegedly shooting his ex-girlfriend to prove his loyalty to his current partner.
According to PEOPLE, 23-year-old Jaquon L. Timothy was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a firearm in connection with the July shooting in Peoria.
Officers responding to a shooting at around 1:30 a.m. on July 19 found a woman, identified as Timothy's ex-girlfriend, suffering from gunshot wounds to her feet. Her current condition hasn't been made public.
During the investigation, Timothy's current girlfriend told police he had allegedly informed her in advance of what he planned to do, and later messaged her saying he had “carried it out,” prosecutors said. Authorities said the shooting was a calculated act intended to “prove his love to his new girlfriend.”
Investigators later obtained a search warrant for Timothy’s phone and found a text message in which he allegedly admitted to the shooting, according to the state’s attorney’s office.
It is unclear whether Timothy has entered a plea or retained legal counsel. An investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the Peoria Police Department at 309-673-4521.
