President Donald Trump said the U.S. “shouldn’t even have” midterm elections this November after he stated that Democrats would "find a reason to impeach me" if they regained congressional power.

During a recent interview with Reuters, Trump cited his administration's accomplishments during his second term as a reason why the November election might be unnecessary.

“When you think of it, we shouldn't even have an election [in November],” Trump said.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later said Trump was “simply joking," claiming he was “just saying we’re doing such a great job … maybe we should just keep rolling.”

However, Trump has repeatedly expressed concern over the possibility that Republicans could lose control of Congress. Earlier this month, Trump warned GOP lawmakers that Democrats would “find a reason to impeach me” if they regained congressional power.

Polling suggests Democrats are favored to make gains this November. An Economist/YouGov poll conducted from January 9 to 12 shows that 44 percent of voters back Democratic candidates, versus 40 percent for Republicans. Historical trends also show that the party not in the White House typically performs better in midterms.

The president has also pushed for stricter voting requirements, including the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship every time a voter registers.
